I have always been a fan of vampires and hybrid creatures that hid in the shadows of night. I never really thought until most recently that I do enjoy the creature that is the vampire.
There are so many representation of the folklore that it brings up many stories in many different media and so I thought it’d be nice to talk a little more about them in form of a Top 10.
Listed below are interesting female incarnations featured both in television and films. Some are retelling of the classic vampire tales we know while others are more modern.
Nyssa was a pure vampire and was also the daughter of Eli Damaskinos, the ruler of the Vampire Nation. Her people feared the threat Blade caused to their people and she swore to kill Blade to protect her kin.
Nyssa’s passion is what draws Blade to her, and after a fierce combat, she wins earning his respect. They work together, and it evolved into a romantic relationship between the two of them before her death. Nyssa died fighting by Blade’s side demonstrating her loyalty.
That scene touched me and so for her strong and loyal character, I wanted to make her part of the Top 10.
Mina served an intelligent vampire and chemist within the league. She held quite the reputation, for being romantically involved with Dracula and Dorian Gray.
Mina was quick to act in combat instinctively using her vampire abilities. Her charm and wit has helped her survive, as well as earning multiple romantic partners. She was reckless and didn’t stop worrying about the consequences.
I guess her wit and smartness is what captivated me in her character. She was different and yet, her femininity very common. However, in my Top 10, she deserved a spot.
Akasha was the first vampire in existence in the universe of The Vampire Chronicles created by Anne Rice.
Akasha could have been selfish and lacked humanistic characteristics. She thought of no one other than herself and what actions would feed her desires the fastest.
Akasha was narcissistic yet capable of controlling other vampires under her command by using power, fear, and manipulation to help push her personal agenda. She believed humans were only useful for food and saw them as pest when amongst other vampires.
Her pure vampire view was so different and very reminiscent of Lestat which I am a fan of. It was easy for me to put Akasha in my Top 10 for her unique view on mankind.
Once was a dancer before meeting Count Dracula, Marishka and Dracula both fell in love. Then he sired her serving as his second wife out of three. His other wives respected one another and saw each other as sisters. She had all the typical vampire abilities and was loyal to Count Dracula and his other wives.
Marishka was devoted to Dracula and sacrificed herself in the fight against Van Helsing to protect her husband. With her vampire abilities and charm, she tried persuading Van Helsing to be an ally instead of an enemy, thus hoping to reduce a threat to her husband, herself, and the other two wives.
Her loyalty and passion were something that set her apart from the two other wives and made her stand out from the background. For that reason, I gave her a spot on my Top 10.
Erika was a vampire maid with hopes of rising in social status amongst her coven. She could have been manipulative. She even pretended to be whatever she needed to be if it got her closer to earning a title in Kraven’s vampire coven.
Despite being vain Erika was friendly toward Selene even if she was envious of her relationship with Kraven.
Erika was deceitful and a convincing liar when she believed it was for a worthy cause. Kraven and the other vampires underestimated her because of her status, yet she used their prejudices to her advantage outsmarting Kraven.
They saw her as the help and laughed at her efforts to rise in social ranks.
I truly enjoyed the Underworld franchise and I guess Erika earned a spot in my Top 10 because of her “Cinderella” situation. A maid hoping to become more, but let’s face it, she was a cunning vampire as well and no frail flower.
However, her strength and determination definitely impressed me and so, she ended up on my Top 10! Well played, Erika!
Katherine was a manipulative old vampire who found joy in causing both Stefan and Damon Salvatore to compete over her affection. Despite Damon having feelings for her, she was attracted to Stefan. She would easily tricked Stefan to fall for her by pretending to be her doppelgänger Elena.
Katherine wasn’t afraid to fight dirty if it earned her an advantage, which was seen in her pining both Stefan and Damon against one another. Many tines she had pretended to be Elena to fool her opponent or trick them into targeting the real Elena and her friends instead of herself.
Katherine was never caught pretending to be Elena because she was patient and observant of her doppelgänger to perfectly mimic her speech and behavior.
Her deception side and finesse were very well developed and her smartness very intriguing. She made her play look so easy and for that, she deserves a spot on my Top 10.
Drusilla was a human with psychic powers before witnessing her entire family slain by Angelus/ Angel before being turned herself. Her travels led her to London, where she met a poet named William who was sired by her to keep her company despite her insanity.
Drusilla was loyal to Spike and could think of things outside the norm – to say the least, using it to Spike’s advantage. Despite her insanity, Drusilla used brute force when fighting Buffy and other opponents. Much is known about her past, yet she always reminded Spike that he wouldn’t be the vampire he was now without her influence.
Even in her death, Drusilla was loyal to Spike trying to save him and wanting to see his plans come to fruition.
I guess her insanity, madly genius, made her special to me because of her unique way of seeing things. She might have been the definition of psychotic, but she made in impact on the series nonetheless and for that, she deserved a high spot in my Top 10.
Rayne was a powerful dhampir (half human/half vampire hybrid) and the daughter of the vampire Kagen. Rayne used to be part of a Freakshow and then, left to be part of a vampire slayer group to avenge her mother’s death.
Rayne was a tenacious assassin with a short temper and foul mouth, but she used her intellect and vampire abilities to defeat her opponents. She aligned herself with humans using her vampire abilities to hunt down other vampires despite being half one herself.
Others expected her to follow in her father’s footsteps, yet she wanted to live a normal life, yet becomes an assassin for hire.
Her strength despite a horrible horrifying past I believe impressed me. She was able to overcome many obstacles and so, I thought she deserved a spot in my Top 10. Rayne believes that if enough creatures fear her, then she can live a normal life in peace.
Selene was vampire sired by one of the elders named Victor. She was given the title Vampire Death Dealer to take out lycans also known as werewolves and other vampire foes. Later, Selene fell in love with a lycan hybrid named Michael Corvin with whom she then has a child, they name Eve.
Selene never hesitated to break the rules and question tradition if it didn’t feel right or seemed wrong. She was a skilled marksman and used her vampire abilities to take out her opponents quite easily.
First loyal to her vampire father, Victor, then to her lover Michael when reminiscing suppressed memories of her parents’ death, she becomes a new vampire determine to do the right thing.
Her way of always keeping her emotions in check, her passion under control, makes her one strong badass vampire I wouldn’t want to be the enemy of.
For her strength, agility, skills, compassion and smarts, Selene well deserves the second place in my Top 10!
Pamela, most commonly known as Pam, was a vampire sired by the very loved Sheriff Eric Northman, the Viking vampire. She helped Eric run the vampire bar Fangtasia and her short-tempered, sarcasm with a quick wit attitude always had her be a favorite of many fans of the show.
Pam could seem blunt or rude even when dealing with others but was always loyal to Eric and never would she turn her back on her maker.
In the series, Pam shown romantic feelings toward her progeny, Tara although their bond was not as strong as the one Pam shared with Eric – it develops stronger over time maybe?
Pam was not ordered lightly, she questioned everyone’s motives critically because of her past that had her learn about human behaviors and her own kin.
Even in scenes when Sookie would try to befriend Pam – maybe jealous of how she was close to Eric, Pam would laugh at her attempts and remind her that she was not to be a “bff” to anyone.
For her iconic presence in the series, her never ending sarcasm and roll of her eyes, loyalty to the one she respected the most and her very daring looks, Pam deserved the number one spot in my Top 10 list!
So that was my list, I hope you enjoyed it and if you have different names you think should’ve been part of it, please share them with me so we could talk vampire more!
